We've been working up to this for awhile now, but the day is finally here! We've launched an IndieGoGo campaign chock full of awesome perks to help us raise funds to make and tour a brand new split EP with Northland Rail Service and The Oldest Man I Know. Check out the launch video:

Yay! If you want to help support the EP, head on over to the campaign and pre-order the album, and grab one of those awesome perks!

Here's the link: Help Make the Double-Stack EP a Real Thing!
Northland Rail Servicetag:northlandrailservice.com,2005:Post/52018062018-04-25T13:59:45-04:002018-04-25T13:59:45-04:00New Music From the Trio
You'd think that, seeing as my office is a studio, I'd be recording stuff all the time. Well, I thought so too. We were both wrong. However! After much deliberation we've dreamed up the next step for recorded music from the band. We play our songs with a very improvisational spirit, aiming to play our songs in harmony with our surroundings and in response to the energy of the crowd. What better way to capture that in the studio than to record live off the floor? So, we spent a few hours in the studio over the last couple of weeks recording a bunch of tunes, and decided on these six for the first batch. If you want to have a listen you can check them out over on the Music Page or find us in person for a rare hand stamped physical copy!

The best part is: Just like the Depot EP, this one will be ever-evolving as well. On the second Tuesday of each month we're going record a live stream from the studio, and pick the best song out of that to take a spot on the EP.

We decided to call this one the 2-Mile EP, because Canada has the longest trains in the world, measured at about 2 miles! Since this will be an especially long EP, it seemed fitting.

If you're one of our Patrons over on our Patreon page you can download it for free! (Along with all sorts of other stuff.)

We've got a big summer coming up. Stay tuned here for more!
Northland Rail Servicetag:northlandrailservice.com,2005:Post/51440792018-03-23T12:26:26-04:002018-03-23T12:26:26-04:00Makin' Stuff
For a long time I've enjoyed making things. Obviously most often it's music, but I like to make all kinds of stuff. This past Christmas I got some leather working tools and picked up a bunch of scrap leather to figure it all out with. I've always made my own straps with a combination of rope, bits of old shirts, string, and a bunch of knots. My first real effort in leather working was destined to be an instrument strap. I intended to make a mandolin strap originally, but necessity breeds invention and my guitar strap broke first. It was just a minor adjustment to turn it into a guitar strap, thankfully. I'm really happy with how it came out, and like with all of these things, I have a bazillion ideas now how to do it differently next time. Making stuff is awesome.

We're making some changes around here at Northland Rail Studios. The one-man-band was experiencing some infighting and creative differences, and I think it's time that we turn this thing into a trio full time. We've been playing live together for a while now, and having a great time with it. We're really starting to develop a cool sound that I really enjoy, so I say let's go all-in.

Expect to see more videos and music in the future with the full band, in all sorts of ways.

The really exciting news is that we're starting work on a full length album to be released this summer! Working on writing some great new material as well as picking the best trad tunes and covers to fit our style. And that leads into our Cross-Canada TOUR for summer 2018! Ah heck ya. 2018 is gonna be something.
Northland Rail Servicetag:northlandrailservice.com,2005:Post/50910722018-02-21T08:56:40-05:002020-11-29T12:38:27-05:00A New Video from the Trio
Howdy!

I've been on a tear since finishing up the last Depot EP video trying to do all of the booking that could possibly be done. It's been a long time since I did so much typing, honestly! In between, the trio has been getting together to practice for our upcoming shows, and we got the chance to put together a new video too! Making music with these two is an absolute joy. Here's The Cuckoo:

It's Depot EP day! This month I decided to do an instrumental with Scruggs style banjo. It was tough, but a fun challenge! I hope you like it!

Rabbit in the Log:

I had a lot of fun doing this one, always trying to find new ways to interact with myself on camera!

Also also, I've redesigned the website! Again! Since NRS is starting to get live shows now, and the trio has been getting ready to hit the road. So with that, we got some pictures taken by our friend Steve Mock. Thanks Steve!
Northland Rail Servicetag:northlandrailservice.com,2005:Post/49841412017-12-19T09:52:56-05:002017-12-19T09:53:47-05:00December Depot EP
Heya,

December's Depot EP! This time it's Will the Circle be Unbroken. And I busted out the old pump organ! I've been looking for an excuse to use it for ages! Ha!

Okay just a quick update this time, busy busy. See you on Friday. (I hope)

This month's Depot EP submission is Old Home Place. A great bluegrass tune, and since I got my resonator banjo back, I'm playing Scruggs-style on this one. Feels good to be pickin' the banjo again though, I gotta say.

Keep posted for more stuff from the band!

It's been a busy month, as usual! I've been playing out around town, a few shows, busking, writing some new tunes, and recording videos!

This month's Depot EP video is The Train That Carried My Girl from Town, a tune that I heard from Doc Watson and The Earls of Leicester a few times over the past couple of years. It popped up again on a playlist recently and I was inspired to give it a shot! I'm pretty happy with how this one came out, the 5 part harmonies were fun to put together!

Check out the video below, and let me know what you think!

I've been super busy over the last couple of weeks playing shows as Northland Rail Service and of course with my band Onion Honey. I've also been making all kinds of videos! Some of them are already out, and some are in the works. I'm particularly excited about one, but that'll have to stay secret until it's done!

So! In the last couple of weeks, I put out 2 new videos featuring some footage (and natural audio!) from my trip to Point Pelee this summer.

The first one was Darling Corey, which is one of my favourite songs to play solo. I have a lot of fun in the instrumental bit!

The most recent tune I put up was Cumberland Gap, an instrumental I've been playing for a while.

And of course. on the 15th of August, I put out the most recent addition to the Depot EP! Railroad Bill:

If you want to hear more, subscribe to my YouTube channel! You can also sign up for the mailing list above, or download the Depot EP right here on my site for just $5!

Anyway, I'm off to see about a fiddle.

See ya soon,

Dave
Northland Rail Servicetag:northlandrailservice.com,2005:Post/48014462017-08-04T08:05:00-04:002017-08-04T08:25:58-04:00Rock Dunder and Sand Lake Seaweed
Another couple weeks gone by. Time sure seems to fly during the summer! I've been super busy between shows (and a CD release) with my band Onion Honey, camping trips, and putting together videos that I've hardly had time for anything else!

During this most recent trip our to Sand Lake I was able to take the time to learn a few new banjo tunes, and then actually write a new one! I'm pretty happy about that because it's been a while. I decided to call it "Sand Lake Seaweed," because oddly enough, a lake called Sand Lake is full of seaweed! Weird. So there it is.

Take a look at the video I made to talk about my trip, and I share a bunch of pictures as well:

And then here's the video I made of just Sand Lake Seaweed:

Thanks for coming by! Remember, if you haven't got the Depot EP yet, you can buy it for just $5 over here.

See ya 'round,

Dave
Northland Rail Servicetag:northlandrailservice.com,2005:Post/47792422017-07-15T08:05:00-04:002020-11-29T12:34:51-05:00Sliding into Redwing!
Hey!

It's the 15th of the month, so that means a new song for the Depot EP! I'm not sure if you remember, but when I went to Point Pelee in June, I went with a plan to start learning a new instrument but offered no clues. Well, that was lap steel! Now, the truth is I've owned one for a few years, and I've picked around on it a bit, but I never really got comfortable, and I certainly never learned any songs. Conveniently for me, there are a bunch of similarities between lap steel and banjo, so I start at a bit of an advantage at least.

I put a bunch of work into learning how to play Redwing on, well, everything for the next Depot EP tune. This time I took a different approach to building an instrumental tune, and a different approach to making the one-man-stringband video! Let me know what you think of this one, will you? Still definitely working on both pickin' and grinnin' at the same time, but we'll get there!

Just wanted to send a quick note over here to let you know that I released a new tune on my YouTube channel!

Bootlegger's Boy is a tune by Old Crow Medicine Show that I actually learned a few years ago and played a few times in a trio with my dad and my girlfriend called The Plug Hat Pickers. It didn't last long, but it sure was fun!

Here's the video:

Also: A new show! Yes! I will be playing at the Grand Trunk Saloon on July 19th. We do love our Wednesdays down at the Saloon.

Will I see you there?

In other, extremely related news, my other band Onion Honey is releasing a new album on July 29th! If you're in Kitchener you can get tickets for the show over there. If you're not, you can pre-order the CD and get it sent to your inbox on release day! So convenient!

Well, it's been a super busy couple of weeks, but I finally finished and released the first video from my Point Pelee adventure! This first one is about my mildly eventful drive down. Keep an eye out here for the next one!

You might have heard already, but in case you haven't, I am headed out camping next week! The plan is to go out and make a bunch of music and videos and potentially learn a new instrument! Exciting! I made a video to talk about it. Check it out!

I had a pretty good week this week! Onion Honey played down in Jarvis, Ontario on a very rainy day for their 150 Homecoming festival. The people were super friendly, and so were their food trucks! I hope we can get back down there on a sunnier day, though, seems like a nice little town. They kept playing baseball through the rain! Gotta love it.

I went to the weekly Thursday jam night at Together We're Bitter brewing in Kitchener, and had some great jams with my friend Bill Howard of Ever Lovin' Jug Band fame! Was great to hang out and talk to the folks there, I really like what they're doing there! And of course, the beer is wonderful. Another rainy night though. Spring has certainly sprung!

I'm off to go camping this weekend, let's hope the rain holds off for a couple of days

And, earlier on in the week I wrote a new tune called Fever Dream, which is up on the YouTube channel now! If you check it out, leave a comment, I'd love to hear what you think! I'll be adding more videos on the channel all the time, so don't forget to subscribe to get notified when I post something new!
